The Joint Union of the international City of tapestry in Aubusson is a public institution with a cultural, artistic, and economic purpose, supported by a tapestry production sector composed of private manufactures and workshops.
A joint union for a great heritage
The Joint Union of the Cité internationale de la tapisserie is a local public institution established in Aubusson in January 2010, in response to the inclusion of Aubusson tapestry in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. It is composed of the Regional Council of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the Departmental Council of Creuse, the Creuse Grand Sud Community of Communes, and receives significant support from the State (DRAC, Prefecture of Creuse). It aims to promote cultural, artistic, and scientific development, as well as economic, tourism, and employment objectives in the Aubusson-Felletin-South Creuse area. From its inception, the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie project has been focused on promoting and transmitting the exceptional craftsmanship of Aubusson tapestry, relying on a tripartite approach: museum space, training centre, and creation hub.
The missions of the Joint Union of the Cité internationale de la tapisserie.
The actions carried out by the Cité internationale de la tapisserie are structured around four main areas:
- The conservation, presentation, and dissemination of a reference collection on Aubusson tapestry; raising public awareness of its UNESCO-recognised craftsmanship; producing knowledge related to this significant heritage;
- The implementation of an ambitious and intensive contemporary creation policy, with the establishment of the Cité’s Contemporary Fund and the production of major event tapestries;
- The sustainability of the complete and preserved production chain, with a focus on training, transmission, and promotion of its craftsmanship of excellence, in response to the growing demand for weavers and the creation of new workshops;
- The development of a tapestry/art woven/textile design and material ecosystem in Aubusson-Felletin-Sud Creuse, in collaboration with various institutional partners (Creuse Chamber of Commerce, Communauté de Communes Creuse Grand Sud, Lainamac association).
