The woven adventures

The large tapestry projects, Aubusson weaves Tolkien and The Imagination of Hayao Miyazaki in Aubusson Tapestry, as well as the exceptional weaving of the 23-meter-long tapestry-installation Tribute to George Sand, offer the public woven adventures centered around the creation of monumental works.

Aubusson weaves Tolkien

Composed of fourteen wall tapestries and two carpets, the "Aubusson weaves Tolkien" tapestry honors the original graphic works of British writer J.R.R. Tolkien. It was as early as 2010 that the Cité internationale de la tapisserie began to reconnect with the historical tradition of large tapestries, ensembles of tapestries sharing the same theme or telling multiple episodes of the same story. Very quickly, it was the extraordinary universe of the author of The Lord of the Rings that was chosen by the Cité's team.

The Imagination of Hayao Miyazaki in Aubusson Tapestry

In 2019, an agreement was signed between the Cité and Studio Ghibli to create six tapestries based on stills from Hayao Miyazaki's films, marking a new challenge for Aubusson tapestry: adapting moving images from animated films into wool. This second tapestry continues a long history of artistic exchange and mutual admiration between the craftsmanship of France and Japan.

Hommage of George Sand

A committed woman of letters, passionate about nature, George Sand maintained ties both with the Creuse and with tapestry. It was she who pointed out the presence of the tapestries from the Lady and the Unicorn series in Boussac to Prosper Mérimée, the first inspector of historical monuments, who ensured their protection.
