Hommage to George Sand
A committed woman of letters, passionate about nature, George Sand maintained connections both with the Creuse and with tapestry. It was she who brought the presence of the tapestries from the Lady and the Unicorn series in Boussac to the attention of Prosper Mérimée, the first inspector of historic monuments, who had them protected.

The genesis of the project
George Sand: Her pen name comes from the Aubusson writer Jules Sandeau, her lover and one of her first literary collaborators. In 2020, the idea of creating a long-format tapestry honoring the many facets of George Sand emerged at the Cité, in anticipation of the 150th anniversary of her death in 2026. A call for creation was launched by the Cité, specifying a long-format tapestry of 50m², with a height ranging from 2m to 2.2m. The French artist Françoise Pétrovitch ultimately won with her model "George."
