Ashitaka soulage sa blessure démoniaque

Ashitaka soulage sa blessure démoniaque is the first of the six tapestries in the "Hayao Miyazaki's Imagination in Aubusson Tapestry" series, created under an agreement between the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie in Aubusson and Studio Ghibli in Tokyo in 2019.

To the challenge of Hayao Miyazaki's imagination

The preparatory work carried out by Delphine Mangeret, the cartoonist-colorist, and the specialists from the Cité internationale de la tapisserie helped define how to interpret this still from the film into an Aubusson tapestry. The artwork had to meet three technical challenges:

  • To create a sense of depth and immersion for the viewer without betraying the original image;
  • To give the impression that sun rays are piercing through the forest, despite wool being a very matte material that absorbs light;
  • To highlight the distinction between plant life and mineral elements.

The tapestry was unveiled to the public on March 25, 2022, in the presence of His Excellency Junichi Ihara, the Ambassador of Japan to France, after eleven months of hand weaving by the Atelier Tapisserie Guillot Aubusson.

The plant world and Aubusson

The result of this monumental tapestry is remarkable for its light, depth of field, and its respect for the work of Hayao Miyazaki. Over six centuries of history, the plant world has been associated with Aubusson tapestry. The verdure of Aubusson reflects a fascination with the plant world, expressed in tapestries depicting gardens in perpetual bloom, offering a warm immersion in a natural setting that hosts a dreamlike narrative.
