Launch of the weaving of “La Sieste de Mei et Totoro” as an Aubusson tapestry.

Since 2020, the Cité has embarked on a new woven adventure, “The Imaginary World of Hayao Miyazaki in Aubusson Tapestry”, currently on display at “The Contemporary Collection Platform.”
Studio Ghibli
Thanks to a partnership with Studio Ghibli, six monumental tapestries make up the series, four of which have already come off the loom and, in some cases, have been exhibited in Paris, Bordeaux, and Japan. “Princess Mononoke” has been selected to be displayed at the entrance of the France Pavilion during the World Expo OSAKA 2025 in Japan.
A new creation
With over 31.5m², “La Sieste de Mei et Totoro”, the largest tapestry in the series, will require a year and a half of weaving at the Cité, with completion on the loom expected in summer 2026. This new creation has been made possible thanks to corporate sponsorship, the support of over 1,350 contributors during the crowdfunding campaign run on Kiss Kiss Bank Bank in 2024, and the backing of the Cité. The woven adventure will conclude at the end of 2026 with “The Secret of the Fukai”, inspired by the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
The weaving of the monumental tapestry Mei and Totoro’s Nap has been entrusted to a consortium of workshops: Atelier A2, Atelier Just’lissières, Atelier A. Konomi, with weaver Margot Malaubier as subcontractor.
This exceptional tapestry will be woven within the Cité internationale de la tapisserie’s contemporary creation platform, where a specially prepared 6-metre loom has been installed to accommodate this monumental 31.5m² work. The weavers began setting up the warp on Monday 24 March. Weaving visits will be organised starting mid-May. Completion on the loom is scheduled for June–July 2026.
